Green Homes Grant

The UK Government has committed to net zero carbon emissions by 2050; and part of the Plan post COVID-19 is creating green jobs.

Green Homes Grant entails government funding up to two-thirds of the cost of :-

  • Insulation (roof, solid wall, cavity wall or underfloor),

  • Improved, thermally efficient glazing and upgrades to energy efficient doors

  • Air source, ground source or hybrid heat pumps

  • Solar thermal

  • Biomass boilers

  • Energy controls

The Green Homes Grant is for residential improvements so Builders, Landlords & Developers can when refurbishing a property claim vouchers worth up to £5,000.

In addition, there is provision in the Grant scheme for those on low incomes who can receive vouchers covering 100% of the expense, up to £10,000.

The Green Homes Grant scheme is only available to home owners and residential landlords in England. You might be able to get funding from a different scheme if your property is in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.

You must redeem the voucher and ensure improvements are completed by 31 March 2022.

It is a requirement of the scheme to use Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) accredited equipment & Contractors, which has the advantage of in some cases extended guarantees on M&E equipment.

Surprisingly there is no requirement to provide a high standard of insulation, or a minimum SAP rating and thereby an A to F rated EPC as a condition of the Grant, which would reduce the Capital cost of MEP / M&E equipment from the outset and the on-going running costs / carbon emissions.

We understand Conservative MP, Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown is trying to improve matters by creating legislation that all new & refurbished homes should meet a minimum standard, however its slow progress, the bill is due its House of Commons second reading March 2021, we wish the bill success.
