Energy Surveys

We have conducted an Energy Survey at a significant UK Engineering Plant and during the one day survey, the we identified a number of savings and produced a 'top 10' of Energy savings works that could be completed first to enable their Management Team to focus on quick wins.

To achieve the energy savings, some of which where zero capital cost, others required Capital expenditure all 'top 10'  items had a payback in 12 months.

If all aspects of the report where implemented, the resulting an annual on going saving of over 14,000,000 kWh would be achievable.

The colleges Senior Management Team required an inspection of the Heating & Plumbing installations throughout the 6 storey building, to evaluate its present condition, recommend improvements and reduce energy costs, also to find opportunities that specifically require capital funding within the limited budget available for investment.

Key points of our recommendations :-

  • Boilers satisfactory
  • Heating and plumbing installations over 40 years old and therefore must be considered to be reaching the end of their economic life.
  • Investigate why does the unoccupied building use approximately 19% of all electricity consumption.
  • Create an Energy Plan
  • Install roof insulation
  • Add Gas, Water & Electricity metering inputs to the Building Management System (BMS), to enable energy monitoring and out of the normal consumption to be investigated.
  • Install absence detection and photocell lighting controls to the Student Teaching areas and Workshops.
  • Reinstatement of the motorised zone valves to control temperature
  • Room temperature controls, fitted to overheating areas.
  • All toilet taps both hot and cold to be fitted with spray nozzles to minimise water consumption.
  • Comfort cooling areas, install interlocks to prevent simultaneous heating & cooling.

Over the years we have visited many Offices, Shops, Factories and Warehouses to find energy inefficiant lighting installations, often, businesses are hesitant to invest in new technology, especially when their current solution is working for them. The most common argument against upgrading from fluorescent or incandescent lamps to LEDs is the cost of purchasing new equipment LEDs are more expensive initially and that can be daunting for companies concerned about return on investment (ROI).

In reality, the ROI for switching to LEDs is significant. Your business will recoup your initial investment within the first few years based on energy savings alone. LED equipped luminaires are a long-term investment, and can last up to 50 times longer than a traditional, tungsten lamp (1,000 hours expectancy) and 10 times longer than a fluorescent lamp (10,000 hours expectancy). Additional savings are less maintenance required due to the labour cost of changing failed lamps being less frequent and with movement detection and daylight linking further cost / energy savings are possible.

If you are worried about the upfront cost and aren’t quite ready to go all-in on LEDs, start with replacing a small amount of luminaires and upgrade other luminaires when the lamps fail.

Alternatively, there are a number of finance packages available for Commercial businesses, who need a new lighting installation, without the a large investment hurdle that comes with it. A number of manufacturers offer new luminaires and other hardware with an individual service contract at a fixed monthly rate. The result? You benefit from the latest lighting technology and ongoing service and support, with minimal capital outlay.
